I had Toshiba 4090DVD once and it plays DVD nice with it's 2X DVD. It was only a Celeron 400 on 4090, I believe it had a DVD decoder in the video core. But please forget about CS. It will barely play it at 640x480 or 800x600 with software render. Don't expect any 3D performance from it, it sucks in that.

I have decided that I would like to have better DVD performance than I have now. My G400 MAX AGP video card appears to help little (if at all) with the processing of DVD video, so all (or most) of DVD playback is a task for the CPU. This is annoying--I've never really completely liked the concept of software DVD

Better bring along some DVD movies to use as testers before you commit your money. On the other hand, the Fujitsu Lifebook P is an example of a Transmeta Crusoe based notebook. With the Marantz gear, I'll have good CD performance with the ki sig, and a good AV amp, and the TV kit keeps its WAF certification :-) If I went with the Denon gear, I'd have an excellent Amp, and perhaps better DVD performance (though the Philips is surprisingly good), but possibly not so good CD performance,

HD-DVD is dead.
You can import progressive scan DVD players for under a grand. If you are using DVD outputs to their base output (composite S-video or component) then you aren't REALLY seeing what DVD can do. To have a debate over NTSC vs PAL to my mind is an argument about entry level performance. DVD performance is SO far beyond

It the old digital verses analog question. Also the dynamics of the picture is also better on the higher end players. Very true, especially in comparison with the LD/DVD combo players where both LD and DVD performance seems compromised in comparison to higher-end LD-only or DVD-only players.
